Welcome

Genomics is the real big data. It is a whole new ball game. Nowadays, the human genome is much easier to sequence but harder to interpret. That’s where Modern Data Scientists come in.

Hi there, welcome to my blog! My name is Fang and I proudly define myself as a Genomics Data Scientist. My journey has taken me from academia to industry, from product management to cutting-edge research and now, I’m immersed in the world of tech as a data engineer at a top-tier company.

My journey began with obtaining a Ph.D. from the Institute of Genetics, Fudan University. After my doctorate in medical genetics, I took a detour into the industry for a four-year stint as a product manager with BD, a global medical technology company. In this role, I was part of a team that integrated the business of flow-cytometry products with single-cell genomics applications.
My tenure at BD reignited my passion for research, and I was fortunate enough to join the lab of an eminent young statistical genetics scientist, Dr. Dajiang Liu at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. There, I rebuilt my ‘toolbox. and I contributed to the development of cutting-edge computational approaches for analyzing biobank scale datasets, using high throughput genotyping and sequencing. This work was geared towards personalized medicine, tailoring diagnosis and treatment to the individual patient.

Following my work in academia, I ventured into the biotech industry again, leading a Natural Language Processing (NLP) project. The goal was to develop an AI platform for medical diagnosis, using AI to decode and understand complex medical data, ultimately making diagnosis faster and more accurate.
Now, I find myself in the tech sector, applying my unique blend of domain expertise in healthcare, statistical approach development, and data mining skills to data engineering at a leading tech firm. My current role allows me to merge my love for science and technology, leveraging machine learning to drive measurement and improvement in business.

Throughout my career, my goal has been to leverage data science to advance the world of health and business, and this blog is an extension of that mission. Here, you will find reflections on my journey, insights into my work, and my thoughts on the future of healthcare and data science.
Thank you for being a part of this journey with me. I look forward to engaging with you in meaningful discussions and exploring new horizons in the realm of data science.
